Thin diamond-like carbon coatings are now widely used to protect hard discs, tape heads and air bearings. Although widely applied, these materials still suffer some drawbacks. An account is presented of the problems associated with the assessment of the mechanical properties of such coatings. The limits for use of Nanoindentation to assess the plasticity of the coating are detailed.
