Forest Recreation Areas (FRAs) in Malaysia are one element of a forestry strategy directed towards the sustainable use of the remaining areas of tropical forest. FRAs provide informal recreational opportunities, free of charge to the public. In this study the recreational value of FRAs was estimated using a contingent valuation method. To assess the validity of the results, individual travel cost models were developed for three FRAs. Both sets of results correspond over a number of criteria. The aggregate benefits of FRAs exceed the costs of their provision, and more could be justified on benefit/cost grounds. Despite this, FRAs will not result in the conservation of large areas of tropical forest in Malaysia. © 1997 A B Academic Publishers.
