This article reports on the innovative work undertaken in re-designing the law degree course at Northumbria University to include more problem-based learning. Links are made with other porfessional education traditions and the impact of the changes on students' attitudes towards their learning and their readiness to undertake real cases are assessed.

Notes: This study makes use of qualitative questionnaire data to assess the impact of curriculum change at degree level on a group of students in the third year of the law degree, just prior to the final year in which they undertake 'live' cases for the public. The extent to which problem based learning can prepare students for the wrld of work is explored.
