Abstract

Amid increasing global and national interest in the built educationalenvironment, this editorial considers developments withinthe Nordic countries that are investigated and discussed withinthe articles in this special issue. We discuss commonalities anddivergences in the experiences of transition and change in theschools, located in a range of times and places. We observe Nordicopenness being reflected in the interest of policy-makers andarchitects in schools with open designs, but also note the veryreal challenges for school leaders, teachers and students of transitioningfrom traditional enclosed classrooms and teachercentredlearning to student-centred approaches in a versatilespace. Yet the articles of this special issue also make clear theeducational and societal reasons and values behind attempts atthis transition, and we conclude our editorial by proposing someways to address the challenges we have identified.
