Transmission-based pedagogy is notably resistant to change, notwithstanding accumulated wisdom in teacher education research. This paper locates the origin of this pedagogy in economic and social transitions of the seventeenth century and argues that erasing this pedagogy therefore requires a holistic, dialectical analysis of its historical emergence in order to sensitise us to the possibilities for transformation immanent in the current educational landscape.
