Non-limiting low flow requirements for juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) and brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) have been identified in study catchments in Cumbria and the Scottish borders, UK, using electrofishing survey data, estimates of Q90 flows derived from the Low Flows 2000 system and bankfull widths. These are expressed as flow per metre bankfull width and as such are transferable to other sites of similar flashy, rainfall-fed streams and rivers. Differences were observed between catchments but not between age classes, and a value of 0.011 m3 s-1 m-1 bankfull width was identified for juvenile Atlantic salmon and 0.007 m3 s-1 m-1 bankfull width for juvenile brown trout. This paper shows how flow per metre width data can be mapped and discusses some potential uses.
