The video ‘How To Become A Spy’ focuses on the idea of friendship as developed in Erskine Childers’ novel 'The Riddle of the Sands'. The emerging intimacy between the two main protagonists is paralleled by them being drawn deeper and deeper into a game of disguises. The video looks at the construction of male bonding as portrayed in what has been described as the earliest and most resonant ‘spy novel’ of the 20th century.
