A layer of sediment of nearly uniform size in a smooth rectangular channel is allowed to erode due to incoming flow of clear water. Bed load is the only mode of transport studied. The motion of the sediment is wave-like with a V-shaped front followed by a raised bed of nearly uniform thickness terminating in a step. The speed of the erosion front is related to the sediment diameter, thickness of the undisturbed bed and the upstream velocity of the flow. The thickness of the erosion wave is expressed as a function of the specific energy of the upstream flow and the sediment diameter. The simplified model developed relates the speeds of movements of the front and the downstream step of the erosion wave. The results presented in this paper are expected to be useful in estimating the sediment discharge from the sediment deposit and hence the time required for flushing it from the rectangular channel.
