Reference dose or guidance levels are a well established approach to the reduction of patient doses in diagnostic radiology. There are two main methods of determining reference doses, one involves patient dose measurements and the other phantom dosimetry. The latter approach lends itself to the development of constancy test protocols, which may be used as part of an acceptance testing programme or to compare the performance of different imaging systems. Various constancy rest protocols and procedures have been proposed and these are reviewed. The constancy test protocols developed within the DIMOND concerted action will be described in detail. The advantages and disadvantages of the various methods and approaches are compared and contrasted. The complementary nature of constancy check protocols with patient dosimetry studies is discussed.
