The edition gives this earliest vernacular translation of the Song of Songs (around 1060) and its Latin context for the first time as it was intended by the author: as synoptic text of the Latin and the Old High German translation cum commentary with a modern translation. This also includes the influential commentary by Haimo of Auxerre from the 9th cent., the major source for Williram. This book is intended to form as basis for my future research into the very varied transmission and reception of the work right up to the humanists. Of the reviews is electronically available: Stephanie Seidl: Doppelte Texte, in: iasl-online from the 10th of May 05. Cf. also the reviews by Angelika Overath: Ekklesiastische Erotik, in: Neue Zürcher Zeitung from the 26t of March 05, Beilage ›Kunst und Literatur‹, p. 46, by Ernst Hellgardt, in: Germanistik (2005), p. 748–749, by Nigel F. Notes: [Both co-authors are responsible for the full text. Michael Rupp started translating the Latin parts of the commentary and I started translating the Old High German parts of the commentary but since they are parallel versions of the text we both not only controlled the translation of the other but worked through the whole commentary several times together to make it consistent. The introduction was done in the same way: firstly, each worked on half of it, then we joined the parts and reworked them to make them consistent.]
