Block copolymer amphiphilic networks based on methacrylate repeat units were prepared, and the adhesion of cells and proteins were studied and compared to similar random copolymer hydrogels. Normal adult human fibroblasts were examined for their ability to attach and proliferate on networks using DNA analysis for cell number and electronmicroscopy for cell morphology. The random copolymers allowed adhesion of fibroblasts only in hydrogels that contained hydrophobic comonomers, such as butyl methacrylate or Lauryl methacrylate. The results show that increasing levels of DNA are only observed on materials that are composed of at least 75 wgt% butyl methacrylate (BMA).
