UK government policy aims to have 50% of 18-30 year olds in higher education (HE) by 2010. This, combined with recent legislation to ensure equality of opportunities and provision for people with disabilities and for those from ethnic minorities, will have a major impact on the supply of, and demand for, HE. In response to the HEFCE injunction to widen student participation – and spurred on by the University’s mission in relation to international students - staff at Northumbria University formed Pedagogy for Diverse Student Needs (PDSN) Task Group. The remit of the group is to develop better understanding of the learning needs of diverse student groups through projects to identify and disseminate good practice. This paper reports on progress to date with one of a number of research strands, a project on dyslexic students. Interviews have been conducted with recent graduates from Northumbria who were diagnosed as dyslexic to establish what support they received during their time at the university. In addition, quantitative data pertaining to student progress, retention and achievement through a number of identified programmes was analysed, with comparisons being made between students with dyslexia and non-dyslexic students in the same cohorts. This data, along with that derived from other projects, will be used to inform the provision of staff training and development and the production of good practice guidelines to ensure student retention and satisfaction.
