Biomedical equipment manufacturers need to develop pain assessment tools that can recognize pain and identify evidences of stress in patients suffering from severe dementia, intellectual difficulties, end-stage amytrophic lateral sclerosis, and severe mental and health problems. Children suffering from progressive neurodegenerative disorders and some patients with brain tumors are also unable to describe causes of pain and require pain assessment tools to locate the causes of pain. Several new pain assessment tools have been developed to help these patients and medical professionals find the causes of pain in patients suffering from these diseases. It is also expected that pain assessment tools will be able to locate pain in patients suffering from severe communication difficulties and identify evidences of different forms of distress in these patients.
