Abstract

Metagenomics is a study on the genomes from all the microbes in a particular environment as opposed to the genome from one organism taken from the environment and grown in a culture in the lab. Metagenomic studies do not produce a complete genome sequence of one organism as a single molecule but vast collections of incomplete and anonymous fragments of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). More Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) researchers are adopting metagenomic approaches to environmental science problems. A dynamic and interdisciplinary metagenomics community has developed at the international level through a two-day workshop organized by NERC and the Society for General Microbiology.
