Incautious ground coupling can give rise to a range of problems including reduction of the scope for others to use the same resource for ground source heat pump (GSHP) purposes, cooling of ground water, warming of the groundwater, alteration of local and regional patterns of groundwater flow, contamination of groundwater, and derogation of groundwater abstractions by open-loop GSHP applications. Worst problems arise with GSHPs installed by suppliers with no adequate knowledge of groundwater hydraulics and the principles of aquifer protection. In view of this, a rational approach to the prediction, prevention and regulation of negative impacts from GSHP developments is proposed.
