Unplanned grocery purchasing accounts for a significant amount of supermarket purchases. This paper aim shed light on consumer behaviour during this type of purchasing and to cross-examine it with the typical planned purchasing behaviour. The empirical investigation consisted of in-depth interviews with British consumers and combined both qualitative and quantitative methods. The key findings illustrate the large emphasis that grocery consumers pay to few key attributes that, simultaneously, affect consumer purehasing behaviour. These findings will be of assistance to retail executives during the planning, development and execution of store strategies aiming to increase product purchasing. Considering the limited research work undertaken so far for this research topic, the findings will also support the development of further systematic work.
