The issues related to ecological architecture and sustainable building are discussed. Major aspects of sustainable design are choice of materials and the performance of a building once it is built. Furthermore, one must fundamentally revise the focus and scope of the debate about sustainable architecture and reconnect issues of technological change with the social and cultural contexts within which change occurs. The challenge is then for researchers to work across disciplines and engage directly in the cultural contexts of the sustainability challenge in order to produce situationally specific design solutions.
