This paper describes an efficient method for integrated shape and thickness optimum design of geometrically nonlinear shell structures. The design variables are shape and thickness of shell structures. An 18-node hexahedral shell is adopted as the basic element formulation with inclusion of proposed methodologies to alleviate various locking phenomena. An automatic mesh generation scheme using the design element concept and iso parametric technique is employed to avoid re-meshing structures every iteration of optimization process. Numerical examples are performed and compared with others' works. Copyright © 2005 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. All rights reserved.
