This paper analyses the evolution of 3D virtual environments (3DVE) from a behavioural standpoint. In short, we view a 3DVE as a process to interact with in different kind of simulations and we analyse the execution models or "glue" mechanisms which enable behaviours to hange the graphical scene. In the paper, we firstly focus on the execution models that typically support a 3DVE and highlight the main behavioural deficiencies derived from classical graphic simulation models. Based on these deficiencies, we critically review a new framework called: intelligent virtual environments (3DFVE) in which AI layers are embedded in the VE to enhance the interactivity of the virtual world. We then argue that this new framework is more suited to increase the interactivity of the current asynchronous event based environments and technologies. © AEPIA.
