Syncope is common in older persons due to a combination of age related physiological changes and co morbidity. Factors such as multifactorial causes, lack of witness account, overlap with falls and concomitant cognitive impairment can make an attributable diagnosis difficult. Successful interventions for cardiovascular disorders which cause syncope in the elderly have wider implications than control of syncopal events and include reductions in falls and possibly prevention or modification of cognitive impairment, dementia and fractures.
