Abstract

Poststroke upper limb pain (PULP) is common, but overall the outlook is good in the early weeks and if detected early. Individuals presenting with PULP after discharge or more than two months after stroke are more likely to have enduring pain. Patients at risk can often be identified in advance by simple clinical examination. For PULP to be effectively treated, it is vital to recognize and treat mechanical and nonmechanical influences. Future research is needed to consider complex interventions for PULP, the underlying mechanisms, and the reliable assessment of pain amongst subjects with cognitive deficits.
