Most kinematic dynamos have been constructed without reference to the magneto-hydrodynamics applicable to the geodynamo; none of the simple cases in the literature are consistent with the magnetostrophic regime expected in the Earth's core. A simple flow that can be driven by the thermal-wind term present in this regime is constructed. This flow is shown to act as a dynamo, via direct three-dimensional calculations and via αω-calculations in the axisymmetric Braginsky limit. The temperature field and heat-source distribution necessary to drive this velocity are considered; although artificial, these forms could be of use in the construction of laboratory dynamos.
