An engineer designing a marine structure in coastal waters has to be able to predict the extreme wave forces likely to act on the structure. Several theories are available to investigate nonlinear waves and of those theories available the earlier ones are mainly restricted to the non-breaking waves. The most severe forces experienced by marine structures, however, are those inflicted by the breaking waves. In the last two decades there has been significant a contribution to the investigation of the breaking waves. In this paper these methods have been investigated with a view to establishing an understanding of the merits of all the methods and suitable ways of using them in design procedure.
