Notes: This paper progresses an earlier paper presented by the author at the Association of American Geographers in 2001. The paper offers a holistic framework to better understand the causes and implications for peripheral regions brought about by volatile episodes of multinational investment. In so doing, the makes a distinctive and innovative connection between existing and well developed political-economy models of peripheral region development with emerging ‘new economic geography’ approaches that emphasise the socio-institutional production and regulation of economic action. Moreover, the conceptual framework examines the inter-relations between the roles and implications for institutions and labour during periods of investment, in so doing addressing the often partial focus of existing inward investment literatures. The paper was presented to the DivesT (Science and Technology Council, Portugal) international research network.
