The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Environmental Diagnostics Program funded a research project with the aim of determining for how long will underground workings continue to release polluted waters. Initial results reveal that very few mine waters in the UK remain acidic for more than a few years after outflow begins. On the basis of detailed studies of the first flush, or the initial decline in pollutant concentrations, a number of remedial schemes have been designed with the expectation that currently acidic discharges will become alkaline in the longer term.
