Experiments were carried out to determine the changes in stress distributions in polystyrene bars caused by UV exposure. It was found that oxygen-diffusion-limited conditions cause the surface regions to suffer much more chain scission than has occurred in the interior of the moldings and that this enabled physical ageing to proceed much faster near to the surface. This caused the surface regions to densify more than the core.
