Given the current debate on model parameterization and scale issues, a methodology is suggested that uses a nested model structure. A localized "patch" model is nested within a catchment model TOPCAT (a catchment version of TOPMODEL). The local patch model and the catchment model share key parameters. The catchment model describes the general status of the catchment and the likely wetness of an area within the catchment, based on a topographic function. The average wetness of a local patch is redistributed within the patch model to a pattern that suits the characteristics of that patch. The work was carried on a terraced catchment in Spain, funded by the EC VAHMPIRE project (VAlidating Hydrological Models using Processes studies and Internal data from REsearch basins). In this exercise a terrace patch model is conceptualized and the localized hydrological dynamics are presented.
