The article is based upon Valéry's assertion that the task of the critic is to identify the "types of transformations" effected by the writer "from one impulse to another". It examines the dynamics of beginning in the writing of Paul Valéry and Marguerite Duras and argues that the creative force is propelled not by any pre-determined sense of finality, but by uncertainty, and the sense that all is lost. We demonstrate the fundamental role of incompletion and absence of direction, so that, far from being based upon a linear, teleological process, the writing proceeds from one absence to another
