Pre-service teachers do not start their courses as blank slates. As a result of their apprenticeship as pupils and other educational experiences they develop images or models of teaching, which are often naive as far as pupil learning is concerned. These images determine much of their reaction to courses; they use what helps them to put the model into operation. This paper describes some of the important constructs in the images of two pre-service geography teachers and shows how these constructs influence the evaluation they made of particular lessons and of their teaching in general. The linkage between images of teaching and professional development has some profound implications: should images of teaching be elicited at interview for selection purposes and can the power of images be circumvented in both pre-service and in-service education?.
