This is a quite abstract and theoretical paper. It will be looking at the different theories but more specifically concepts that have been used in the academic literature to grasp the current situation of cities and regions in a globalized world. First, I will be introducing the theoretical framework in which my thoughts are embedded and after that I will present some theoretical concepts that are being used by scholars to understand urban changes. After that, I will confront those theoretical concepts with some more practical metaphors that have also been used to describe cities. I will finally give some examples in order to show how this way of thinking can actually help in researching processes of urban regeneration in a city such as Bilbao
