Abstract

This report is a statistical analysis which presents findings from a study of classroom interaction in privately-funded schools serving low-income families in Hyderabad, India. In common with other developing countries, India has seen a proliferation of such schools and yet little systematic study has been made of them. 138 lessons were analysed using a computerised systematic observation system. Teacher-led recitation, rote and repetition dominated the classroom discourse with little attention being paid to securing pupil understanding.
