Notes: This paper argues both for the moral relevance of justification to state coercion and a particular account of how we should conceive of justification in circumstances of diversity. Its originality lies in the connection of epistemic and metaethical questions with contemporary liberal responses to diversity. The paper demonstrates the significance of such questions for debates over liberal theories of the state in areas such as multiculturalism and civil disobedience.
