Notes: In 1989 Beauregard wrote that practitioners straddled a chasm between modernity/postmodernity. I argue that the abyss is now poststructuralist, between transcendence & immanence. The paper stems from my unease over a seeming lack-of-fit in current theory & practice. I seek the causes of my unease by examining: a)recent changes to the English planning system & tensions between local practice & central rhetoric, b)recent developments in planning theory & tensions between theory based in Habermas or Lacan & the more fluid relational view of authors such as Healey. Tensions may be from fundamental differences between transcendental & immanent frames: practice & theory seek immanence, yet are caught in remnants of transcendence. I explore the potential of Deleuze's concept of 'becoming' as creative experimentation. I conclude that planning may involve a transcendental structure immanent in its practical local expressions; & that theorising could benefit from 'becoming-planning'.
