This article reports on three aspects of an expert seminar on translating the work of the eminent Dutch poet Gerrit Kouwenaar. Firstly, translator discussions focused largely on issues of word-level equivalence, though the role of the poet's own insights was also discussed. Think-aloud recordings of five translators working on one poem over three drafts gave insights into priorities (largely lexis, but also image and word-sound) and processes. Finally, collaborative translation allowed translators' individual differences in approach to complement each other.
