Column is a replica, 390 x 80 x 80 cm, of a half-column in the main space of the Hatton Gallery. Made from recycled mixed plastic waste, this site-specific work is installed slightly turned in front of the copied original architectural feature. The work questions our understanding of cultural achievement through the juxtaposition of two opposing outputs of our Western culture - the art museum/exhibition space and plastic consumer waste. In this work, the recycled plastic column supports the edifice of Victorian museum architecture. Column has been realised as part of the group exhibition, Sustainable Clay at the Hatton Gallery, Newcastle, UK, 1st February – 3rd March 2025.
