Abstract

Kiosk is a new research and art project that investigates how contemporary art practice can contribute to intercultural dialogue. The main output of this project is an architectural sculpture (Kiosk) constructed from reclaimed wooden church pews that draws on the visual language of Islamic architecture.Kiosk is conceived as a contemplative space as well as a focus to explore wider issues of social inclusion, diversity and common ground in our society. Integrating the materials of one religious community with the iconography of another, Kiosk negotiates cultural difference in several ways: as a tangible symbol of religious diversity and respect by providing a focus for debate that leads to greater understanding and tolerance, and a place where diverse communities can meet.Kiosk has been exhibited at Fabrica in Brighton in July/August 2021 and Ushaw, Historic House and Gardens, Durham in April - July 2022.The exhibitions were accompanied by a diverse outreach and engagement programme with over 40 different events that attracted more that 500 people. It was funded by Fabrica and a £15,000 grant from the Arts Council of England.Kiosk will be shown at a subsequent exhibition at Chester Cathedral in 2026 Fabrica produced a short documentary film about Kiosk that can be seen here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4poPE9Umj94Information on Kiosk can be found at my website: https://www.wolfgangweileder.com/sculpture/kiosk.html
