Abstract

An exhibition by artist Catrin Huber that re-imagined the Antikensammlung as a space to weave together new and old stories, colliding contemporary artworks, ancient statues, women from Greek tragedy, and the architecture of the Antikensammlung. Huber used short films, wall paintings and storytelling to interrupt and re-structure the collection, creating new constellations. The voices of women from Greek tragedy guided visitors through the collection: Greek and Roman myths and their many re-tellings through the centuries have given us complex, multilayered women characters; albeit hidden behind more prominent, visible heroes and gods. In Greek tragedy, especially with Euripides, some of these women are given voices. They often find themselves in extreme, challenging circumstances, contending with intense, raw emotions and traumatic experiences. Their dialogues and speeches articulate their situations, build cases, express emotions, and plan actions. Across the centuries, these complex women characters speak to us, their anger and grief still palpable, their emotions raw. These Greek women – their voices - are accompanied by statues of the gods and goddesses that meddled with / manipulated their circumstances. Dialogues shine light upon relationships and hint at charged situations. Taken out of context, they resonate even more today. Huber’s short films and wall paintings, specifically developed for this exhibition, were set in dialogue with the statues, texts and architecture of the Antikensammlung. Different forms of representation and story-telling collided, contradicted and illuminated each other. The films connected to contemporary women, exploring intense emotions, their agency, and these emotions relationship with interior and exterior spaces. Colourful wall paintings set a framework / structure for the unfolding stories, choreographing the walk-through the Antikensammlung. Who is telling stories and for whom?
