Lightweight artificial muscles have the potential to mimic the performance of skeletal muscles through motions such as bending, rotation and contraction. These can be responsive to external stimuli. For example, thermally responsive, coiled muscle actuators have been developed from overtwisted yarns and fibres. These have resulted in very strong materials that give large contractions and high mechanical work.1 The study presented here aims to find an alternative method of forming coiled actuators from bilayer polymer strips, where one layer is a non-swellable plastic sheet, while the other is hygroscopic ether-based polyurethane. The properties of the actuator are observed and the effects of changing different variables of the strip are be investigated.1 Haines (et al.), Science 343: 868-872, 2014.
