Abstract

From Shakespeare’s Shylock to Tony Soprano in the popular TV series, moneylenders have been popular culture’s favourite villain figures. This study explores how representations of moneylenders (e.g. bankers, bailiffs, loan sharks) and their practices in media affect the perceptions and behaviour of consumers with varying levels of borrowing experience.
