Abstract

Introduction: Multi-stakeholder discussions indicate that an improved understanding of motor neurone disease (MND), anxiety and claustrophobic symptoms will enable occupational therapists to intervene and better support people on their disease journey. Objective: The objective of this scoping review is to identify the breadth of existing evidence relating to anxiety, claustrophobia, and decision-making about important occupations and assistive device use for people with MND. Inclusion criteria: People with MND (or analogous conditions, COPD and neurodegenerative conditions, if limited relevant information is available for people with MND) who experience anxiety and, or, claustrophobic symptoms and their decision-making around occupations and assistive devices. Methods: An information specialist and researcher will search Embase, MEDLINE, APA PsycINFO, CINAHL with no restrictions on dates and language, the reference lists of relevant articles, relevant websites and publicly available data from patient forums. Title and abstract then full-text screening will be completed independently in duplicate by two reviewers. Following an initial pilot of 10 articles, data extraction will be undertaken by one reviewer and checked by a second. Descriptive content analysis with open abductive coding will be used to analyse the data. Reporting will adhere to the PRISMA-ScR recommendations.
