Abstract

© The Institution of Engineering & Technology 2023.Transverse flux machines have the potential to offer high torque density in some applications. Their 3D flux path can be accommodated by making the stator from soft magnetic composites (SMC). It is generally accepted that SMC can offer low loss at high electrical frequency, but loss characteristics vary widely depending on particle size, pressing temperature, pressing pressure and component shape. This paper reports on experimental results of a 15000 rpm transverse flux machine with a segmented SMC stator. The results are used to investigate the performance of SMC within a real machine. Both no-load and load tests have been conducted, and SMC losses have been investigated using different computational models. The transverse flux machine prototype has been proved capable of delivering near 1.6 kW at 5000 rpm.
