One afternoon, with time to kill, a filmmaker is drawn to observe the movement of ants on a wall. With smartphone to hand, impromptu recording starts, narratives emerge and a silent film is made. Recalling the everyday films of Jonas Mekas, Afternoon with Ants (A silent film captures a moment at once prosaic and transcendent. Afternoon with Ants (A silent film) is my second smartphone documentary. Like my first smartphone doc 'A Snail's Pace', (about a snail), this film is an example of impromptu filmmaking that is now afforded by the filming quality of the smartphone. In both films, I had no plan to make a film. It came about as a result of boredom, which leads to close observation of normally not noticed things (like snails and ants), and finally an open-ended experiment in filming these tiny creatures. The small size of the smartphone makes it possible to get close to film and produce images that play with scale so as to immerse the viewer in the world of the ant. And that is a world without sound as ants have no ears!
