Social Identities, Linguistic Practices and Self-Presentation among Minoritized Groups As a result of social justice movements such as Black Lives Matter and Stop Asian Hate, there is now a spotlight on minority group members and their ability to present their authentic selves. The study and discussion of minority communities is uniquely complex: present trends in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in organizations and institutions have been the result of greater social awareness, yet monolithic conceptualizations are problematic and the need for more nuanced subgroup identities may be needed. As an answer to ICA’s invitation “to examine authenticity as a core construct of communication from a variety of perspectives using diverse methodologies across different levels of analysis”, members of the International Association of Language and Social Psychology (IALSP) present this roundtable discussion panel to highlight: (a) the international and interdisciplinary work we do in the area of language and social psychology; and especially, (b) the important work we are doing related to promoting diverse voices in their presentation of their social identities. Here, we will bring together research on language, communication, and social psychology addressing social identities and intergroup communication among individuals who are members of minoritized, racialized, marginalized, and/or vulnerable populations such as ethnic minoritized people, people living with health issues or disabilities or displaced people.
