This chapter proposes social presence – social, emotional, and cultural connectedness among learners and teachers – as the key ingredient that most learners and teachers feel is missing in their online interactions. Social presence can help reduce psychological and social distance in online teaching and have a significant impact on the effectiveness of language learning. While a large body of research on social presence investigates asynchronous text-based computer-mediated communication, exploration of multimodal synchronous (e.g. Satar, 2015, 2020) and asynchronous (e.g. Háhn, 2020) online interactions is rare. Following a review of current debates and developments, this chapter will illustrate multimodal construction of social presence in both synchronous and asynchronous interactions involving text, still and moving images. Data come from two online contexts: virtual exchange and synchronous online teaching. This chapter will identify key research directions and make suggestions for language learners and teachers for effective construction of social presence in their online pedagogical interactions.
