In this chapter, we describe the results of a film reception study and audience ethnography that we conducted in Argentina and Colombia, both countries that have experienced significant periods of political violence in their recent history. We argue that showing our audiences’ representations of conflict from unfamiliar places presents them with an interpretive challenge that begins to reveal the imaginative mappings through which both individual participants and communities make sense of conflict.
