Metamorphoses. The impact of metamorphosis is re-interpreted in the Fasti as a marker of a regular flow of time as ordered by the Roman calendar. This has implications for the role of the divine as well. In the Fasti, the gods are subordinated to the ordering power of time, which dictates the coming and going of the festivals – and narratives – dedicated to each deity. Finally, with respect to Augustus’ interventions in the Roman calendar, the language of metamorphosis with the regularity of time it suggests illustrates how profoundly the new ruler interferes with the flow of time. Metamorphic language in the Fasti, then, functions as a powerful medium which underlines the multifaceted concerns of this work.
