The 1864 Knaresborough Hoard of late Roman vessels and other objectswas probably the largest hoard of Roman copper-alloy vessels and ironobjects ever discovered in Britain. The surviving objects are currentlyheld in the collections of Yorkshire Museum. This study presents the firstcomprehensive academic consideration of circumstances of the hoard'sdiscovery (including a probable findspot); a detailed typologicaldiscussion, supported by portable x-ray florescence analysis of theobjects and places the hoard, for the first time, in its rightful placeamong Romano-British non-precious metal hoards. It demonstrates thevalue of collaborations between museums and researchers and the valuethat can be gained by multi-disciplinary methodologies to antiquariandiscoveries.
