Universities invest considerable resources in learning technologies in support of the core mission of teaching and learning. They depend on their faculty members to use this technology appropriately to engage with students in academic pursuits. Indiana University (IU), a large public research institution with more than 110,000 students enrolled at eight campuses throughout the state of Indiana, has adopted action items in its latest strategic information technology plan to leverage faculty professional development regarding the effective use of technology for teaching and learning (Empowering People, 2009). Current campus workshops and online training opportunities-though valuable for faculty professional development-generally do not provide convincing evidence of faculty development beyond documenting attendance or completion.
