Notes: This chapter in the well-known series of Nuffield election studies was co-authored with Margaret Scammell (LSE). We contributed 50% each. The chapter is based on an extensive and detailed content analysis, both quantitative and qualitative, of national press coverage of the 2001 election campaign. It maintains comparability with earlier chapters in the series (Martin Harrop has written or co-authored all the chapters since 1987) while also noting Labour's unique achievement in securing the support of the press in this election. The chapter also suggests that the question of whether newspapers shape or reflect their readers' preferences is misconceived; rather, both respond to the one and undeniable political reality.
