© 2019Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common and dangerous complication of hospital admission, even mild dysfunction being associated with reduced survival. Unfortunately, its recognition is often delayed and its management, frequently suboptimal. A failure to recognize relevant risk factors can expose patients unnecessarily to the danger of AKI. This review presents a structured approach to diagnosis and non-specialist management that should provide a framework for routine clinical care.
